Deerselect
DEERSelect is the new "Across Herd" national breed value programme.
This now provides the scientific tools to assist us with our genetic selection processes.
BVs for venison are available and identified in this catalogue.
We strongly endorse the use of Breed Values.
Heritability
At Stanfield we have placed a significant emphasis on genetic strength and therefore heritability.
It is a well known fact that generally the stronger the concentration of performance genetics the stronger the heritability. E.g. If a stag comes from a herd with a high strike rate of high performance genetics, he is much more likely to breed that way. Conversely, a top stag as an individual who comes from a large selection pool of varying genetic depth and strength may breed that way.
Simply put, a stag will generally reflect in his breeding the genetic merit and strength of the herd he comes from. For farmers selecting a sire, this is in our view a crucial factor.
At Bangor we have a ruthless evaluation and culling policy and are proud of the exceptional genetic worth of our female base as well as our sires. As the catalogue shows, we are supporters of and encouraging the use of DBVs for in herd performance evaluation.
Breeding for trophy & velvet
There has been recent debate as to the merits of whether a trophy stag can also be an important velvet stag and vice versa. In our experience and therefore our opinion, there is absolutely no need to sacrifice velvet genetics when breeding for trophy as well.
In our 2010 sale, we had many stags between 20 & 30 points ALL of whom had heavy beams. We simply will not compromise antler thickness & weight for SCI score nor do we have to.
Case in point Hawkeye had 28 points and was super A in the beam. Lot 10 another super A beamed stag with 28 good points. This has been the case for many stags in our offering for many years.
Today a good number of our offering are over 20 points, highly suited for trophy but thick beamed as well. Simply put the genes of Woburn & Warnham are generally going to give you a dual purpose animal.
